EPSRC announces funding for BRAIN-SAFE

The Imperial College London-led BRAIN-SAFE hub is among five research and partnership hubs announced by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

The announcement sets out more than £52 million in government investment across the five hubs. This is the total for the programme, not an individual award amount for BRAIN-SAFE.

Understanding individual risk from head impacts

Led by Professor David Sharp at Imperial College London, BRAIN-SAFE will bring together engineering, artificial intelligence and clinical expertise to develop models of brain injury risk following head impacts. The research will account for individual differences, including age, sex and previous injuries.

The hub will explore how this knowledge could support head impact alerts in sport, assessment after road collisions and improvements to protective equipment in sport, transport and defence. These are research goals; the announcement does not establish that these technologies are already available or clinically validated.

Working across sectors

UKRI names partners including the Royal Air Force, Rugby Football League, World Rugby, Premiership Women's Rugby, GB Boxing and Jaguar Land Rover. Collaboration across these settings will help connect the research with real-world challenges.
